Do you have experience managing the design, budget, and construction execution of multiple construction projects? Do you love food? If so, read on! We may have the role of a lifetime for you!

The qualified candidate has at least 3 - 5 years of construction project management experience ( retail and refrigeration experience preferred ) and is a raving fan of the Trader Joe's concept. A Bachelor's Degree in project management, construction management, or a related field is strongly preferred. This role is based in our office in Monrovia, CA.

The Construction Manager is responsible for:

  • Managing multiple construction projects and special projects per year to ensure on-time completion, budget cost control, accuracy, and quality of work
  • Retaining and managing architects, industry experts, engineers, and general contractors
  • Overseeing architects in preparing construction documents, bringing a working knowledge and insight into refrigeration equipment, electrical, plumbing, and HVAC systems
  • Reviewing construction documents for accuracy and coordinating with project stakeholders in other departments, such as Purchasing, MIS, and Accounting 
  • Coordinating design, scope of work, and schedule with the store operations crew and obtain internal approvals
  • Managing the application process for all permits and governmental approvals
  • Coordinating construction work with property managers, including obtaining landlord approvals as required per lease
  • Establishing construction timetables and communicating with appropriate parties
  • Generating budgets for store remodels and expansions, and other construction projects
  • Soliciting and negotiating construction bids and memorializing agreements in standard contract form
  • Visiting job sites on an as-needed basis during construction 
  • Ensuring completion of punch list items
  • Reviewing and authorizing contractor payment applications, and submitting for processing 
  • Tracking costs for projects and providing regular completion status and financial reports through project management platform
  • Supporting Directors of Construction with new stores, as needed 
  • Traveling frequently to stores and construction sites 

The Construction Manager has the following skills:

  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Comprehensive project and construction management skills, including extensive experience reading plans, building and analyzing budgets, creating and maintaining schedules, and negotiating with contractors
  • Superior attention to detail, communication skills, and interpersonal skills
  • Problem-solving, proactive approach, and a sense of urgency
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Familiarity with National Building and Fire and Accessibility Codes
  • Strong understanding of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office products
  • Ability to learn and utilize project management software platform
  • Understanding of refrigeration system design and operations preferred
  • Experience with AutoCAD preferred
